99 Eruptions Observed is a work of visualizing recent eruptions of active volcanoes. Parameters such as the elevation of volcanoes, the volcanic explosiveness index or the most abundant type of rock are translated into graphic parameters. These visualizations thus seek to assign a new visual expression, and eventually suggest a new understanding of the information collected.

Using the browser it is possible to interact and modify a scattered collaborative interface. It is thought of as an expansion system of each connected unit, transposing the connected devices to the performative space. It uses the network generation system, Akson.

Machines of Disquiet are a series of experiments about the manipulation of media materialities and textual forms that explore the free play of signifiers. They use the Book of Disquiet as a modular textual database for a series of applications that engage digital modalities (text, image, sound, animation) and interactions through programmed permutations at different scales (from letter to word to sentence). When considered as a game experiment, the Machines of Disquiet allow us to define contexts for participation that model gameplay as a range of interactions with digital objects. When considered as a textual experiment, the Machines of Disquiet are about the disquiet of experience and imagination, and about the possibility of purely aesthetic enjoyment and the creation of meaning.

As Artificial Neural Networks grow deeper, their number of layers increases, as can happen in the number of Perceptrons per layer. This rises the number of decision iterations, developing an iterative complexity in the decision-making process, turning these systems into black boxes.

TransparentPerceptron is a visualization that reveals the accumulated decision iterations of the most elementary system of an Artificial Neuronal Network: a Perceptron. The single data point and the goal to be attained, are both generated randomly at system startup. Each iteration, is less blurred as it approaches the system’s goal.

Taking the ambivalences of both the Whole Earth Catalog and the Internet, Whole Web Catalog is an ongoing web search engine that explores the space between a sharing global community and a whole system control. Connected to various information services and datasets through open APIs, Whole Web Catalog is a mash up tool to already existing tools, that returns an assemblage of information in order to get non-unilateral responses. While being an alternative tool to corporated search engines, it also questions the relevance of the information available in open datasets.

Off-Synthesis is an exhibition work that accepts the restrictions that the covid imposes on us, and that allows a visit without leaving home, through our mobile phone or our computer. Aware of the limitations that a virtual visit brings - more distractions, less focus - it takes on the character of a summary. Here is a synthesis, necessarily inaccurate, of some examples that help to build the history of modular and prefabricated architecture (“offsite architecture”), through images and manipulable 3D models. Eight buildings are selected to illustrate the heterogeneity of this type of architecture, made of such different materials and processes, and with objectives as diverse as building cheaper, faster, in inhospitable places or with little manpower.

In this conversation, Inês Catarina Pinto, editor of Nevoazul magazine, talks to the designer Bárbara Nogueira about the importance of recovering our time online and with the artist Rodolfo Oliveira about digital art. Rodolfo will also share with us how he joined a global community of artists who produce art on the blockchain.

A Web Page in Three Acts is a live coding performance which combines principles of choreography within the formal structures of coding. An assemblage of semi-improvised visuals and composition experiments in web environments. The screen becomes an open stage for the hybrid code which links choreography and web programming as well as body and language. For the series ‘WebPage Act I, II, III’, Joana Chicau created a specific grammar or vocabulary that links choreographic concepts from post-modern dance with web-coding functions.

The field of ecoacoustics studies the importance of sound as a component of an environment. In the case of the ocean environment, sound contributors can either be natural or human (anthropogenic). Understanding these soundscapes may be a powerful tool to predict the evolution of these ecosystems. Therefore, ecoacoustics approaches are considered an exciting field to improve the link between sciences and art, providing the setting for artistic exploration of sound material. Moreover, by combining ecoacoustics with creative practice, one can reveal the power of sound (and all their counterparts such as vibration or particle motion) as an immersive medium for soundscape composition, reviewing concepts such as aurality, presence, immersion or synesthetic perception in the context of interdisciplinary sonic experiences.

xCoAx 2020 is a special online edition that is compatible with your wellness and safety. The 8th Conference on Computation, Communication, Aesthetics & X, will happen from 8 to the 10th of July, in Graz. xCoAx has been an occasion for international audiences to meet and exchange ideas, in search for interdisciplinary synergies among computer scientists, artists, media practitioners, and theoreticians at the thresholds between digital arts and culture. Previous editions of xCoAx took place in: Milan 2019; Madrid 2018; Lisbon 2017; Bergamo 2016; Glasgow 2015; Porto 2014; Bergamo 2013.

— an interlude on Boris Chimp 504’s recent mission “Vanishing Quasars”

Right before reaching the accretion disk of Quasar “WISE J1052+1519m” Boris had an intense dream where interstellar clouds of red dust approached him beeping subliminal audiovisual messages. From this experience he would later find the path to reach the vanishing quasar.

Used to work through the web, because of a 550km distance, Miguel (based in Faro) and Rodrigo (based in Porto) always meet on the same physical space at some point to present audiovisual shows or installations. Due to the current situation - and following the challenge by Criatech - this will be their first AV show not sharing the stage. Hopefully they will meet somewhere on the matrix.

Bárbara Nogueira

Bárbara Nogueira (1993) was born in Porto. She has a degree from the School of Arts and Design in Design Communication (2014) and a master's degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto in Graphic Design and Editorial Projects (2016), with the thesis “A Written Word: On-Screen Reading Experience “. She has since collaborated with design studios Surreal and Bürocratik. Currently she is Creative Director and Designer for Nevoazul and also as a freelancer in the areas of editorial design, art direction and web design.

Beatriz Correia

Beatriz Correia (S. Miguel, 1993) is a graphic designer and creative coder. She holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in Design and Multimedia from the University of Coimbra. Currently, she is a designer at the FBA. studio in Coimbra. She also works as a freelancer designer especially for clients in the cultural field. She is responsible for the development of the Criatech website since its first edition. She is a founding member of the Há Baixa cultural association, a multidisciplinary collective to promote the development of projects in social design and architecture in the Coimbra Historical Centre.

Boris Chimp 504

Boris Chimp 504 - Miguel Neto (Sound) and Rodrigo Carvalho (Visuals & Interactive Systems) - tells the tale of Boris 504, a chimpanzee sent to the moon by the soviets in 1969 getting stuck in space forever. Since then he has been exploring the space-time continuum, jumping between several dimensions of the universe. With this starting point, Miguel & Rodrigo have been exploring the relation between sound & image since 2010 mixing techno, psychedelia and noise, along with audio-reactive visuals generated in real time, creating an immersive voyage strongly influenced by science fiction, interspersing with the most current scientific discoveries and merging reality and fiction into a narrative of its own.

Boris Chimp 504 has presented both av performance & interactive installations on festivals such as Sonar (Barcelona), Mutek.Es (Barcelona), ADAF (Athens), BAM (Liège), ECHO (Dubai), Stereolux (Nantes), Iminente (Lisbon) among many others.

Catarina Lee

Catarina Lee is a designer, teacher and researcher, whose practice seeks to explore data-based and software-driven audiovisual systems. She has focused on the topic of transmutability of digital data, with a particular interest in textual data. She has a degree in Communication Design and a Master in Communication Design and New Media, from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon. In 2017 she co-founded the project Temp Studio, a program of artists-in-residence focused on digital experiences, with the aim of promoting the production of digital media art in Portugal. In 2019, she co-organized the educational project Container • Studio • School, a program that brought together students and artists in a collaborative learning process, in which they sought to promote critical thinking on topics related to Art, Design and Technology.

Francisca Rocha Gonçalves

Francisca Rocha Gonçalves is a researcher from Porto, where she currently lives and works. She has a background in biological sciences with a degree in Veterinary Medicine from ICBAS (University of Porto) and a Multimedia Master in Interactive Music and Sound Design from FEUP (University of Porto). In 2017, she enrolled in Digital Media PhD at FEUP (University of Porto) under the program UT Austin | Portugal CoLab.

Combining her interests in sound, technology, art and science, she aims to raise environmental awareness in society, promoting environmental education through artistic practices and sound art. Her great passion for biology and music led her on-demand to find synergies between nature and sound. Bridging these two worlds, she attempts to find new musical approaches, not only for musical compositions but also for live performances.

Inês Catarina Pinto

Inês Catarina Pinto (Guarda, 1989) has a degree in Communication Sciences and a master's degree in Media Studies and Journalism from the University of Porto. In 2016 she founded the printed magazine "Nevoazul", of which she is editor. Writes on topics related to technology, Internet culture and digital tools. Inês works as an independent researcher in the field of digital communication and, twice a month, writes the newsletter "The Internet in a Telegram".

Joana Chicau

Joana Chicau is a graphic designer, researcher and coder, with a background in choreography and performance, currently based in The Netherlands. Her transdisciplinary project intertwines media design and web environments with performance and choreographic practices. In her practice, she investigates the intersection of the body with the built, designed and programmed environment, with the aim of expanding the ways in which digital sciences are presented and made accessible to the public. She has actively participated and organized events with performances involving multi-location collaborative coding, algorithmic improvisation, open discussions on gender equality and activism.

Luís Arandas

Media artist and sound designer based in Porto. Luis Arandas is currently enrolled in the UTAustin/Portugal PhD in Digital Media and associated with INESC-TEC through the Xperimus Project. Previously at Braga Media Arts, Luis holds both an M.A. in Sound Design and Interactive Music by FEUP and a B.A. in Sound and Image by UCP. He focuses his work on artistic performance, new media in art and musical technology. Luis has installed and performed in venues such as Fabbrica del Vapore, Dokkhuset Scene, NTNU, gnration and Teatro Municipal do Porto through events such as eNTERFACE, ICLI, xCoAx, WAC, Orbits Festival and Semibreve Festival.

Luís Lucas Pereira (PT) has a degree in Computer Engineering and is a researcher at the Center for Informatics and Systems and the Center for Portuguese Literature at the University of Coimbra. He co-created the collective Maria Adelaide and the Playsketch project. He likes to experiment at the intersection of computing, literature and new media.

Luísa Ribas

Luísa Ribas holds a PhD in Art and Design (2012), a Master in Multimedia Art (2002) and a degree in Communication Design (1996) from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. She is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon where she teaches Communication Design with a focus on the complementarity between print and digital media, namely in the fields of design project. Her research is devoted to the study of computational systems as aesthetic artefacts, their design and experience, focusing on interactivity and audiovisuality. She is currently a member of CIEBA, Center for Research and Studies in Fine Arts and a collaborator of ID +, Research Institute for Design, Media and Culture. She has contributed to several publications on design and digital arts, as well as the organization of international conferences such as ICLI2014 or the xCoAx conference on Computation, Communication, Aesthetics and X, since 2017.

Marco Heleno

Marco Heleno is a designer that studies and develops work in the areas of information visualization,computational aesthetics and interaction design. He is currently focused on his doctoral thesis in explainable artificial intelligence and computational aesthetics at the NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics (NOVA LINCS), School of Science and Technology of the NOVA University of Lisbon, a PhD in Digital Media, in collaboration with the University of Porto (both in Portugal) and the University of Austin, Texas (USA). He teaches at the Caldas da Rainha School of Arts and Design (ESAD.CR), Polytechnic of Leiria. Holds a master's degree in Technology and Digital Art from the University of Minho and a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and Multimedia from ESAD.CR. He also co-organizes the Video and Digital Arts festival (EVA) at ESAD.CR and the Processing Community Day, in Lisbon.

Miguel Carvalhais

He is a designer and musician. He is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, and a researcher at INESC TEC, currently a fellow at V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media.

Collaborate with Pedro Tudela in the @c project since 2000. In 2003 started together the Crónica label where they’ve been releasing experimental and electronic music.

Completed the PhD thesis in 2011, following that, published the book Artificial Aesthetics: Creative Practices in Computational Art and Design in 2016.

He is a co-founder of the xCoAx conference on Computation, Communication, Aesthetics and X, with previous editions in Bergamo 2013, Porto 2014, Glasgow 2015, Bergamo 2016, Lisbon 2017, Madrid 2018, Milan 2019, and an upcoming edition in Graz 2020. Also helped to organize the Invisible Places symposium (2014 in Viseu, 2017 in Ponta Delgada), ICLI 2014 and 2018.

Miguel Neto (Faro, 1979) Musician, sound designer, digital artist and curator / event producer, he has a Master's Degree in Digital Arts (UPF, Barcelona). He is mainly interested in working in a multidisciplinary way in order to create multi-sensorial experiences. He is the sound side of the Boris Chimp 504 audiovisual project; how mEEkAlnUt he explores musical improvisation and has been making sound installations; he is also the curator of the experimental music and gastronomy sessions "AVE" and "AVE RARA FEST" in the city of Faro.

Rodolfo Oliveira

Born in 1977 and lives in Porto. He attended a painting course but never finished it; he is a self-taught man of many techniques who likes to explore simple topics. In 2015, through the TK Workshops, he began to micro-edit translations of texts that hef all in love with, and to develop his research through printmaking, cyanotype and photography. In 2018, he began to focus on some 'new media' such as animated GIFs, video or 3D modeling and Augmented Reality, and since then he has carried out several digital editions registered on the Ethereum blockchain.

Rodrigo Carvalho (Porto, 1983), designer multimédia & new media artist.

Rodrigo Carvalho (Porto, 1983), multimedia designer & new media artist. He as a degree in Design from U. Aveiro (Aveiro, 2005), a Master in Digital Arts from U. Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, 2009) and PhD in Digital Media from U. Porto / UT Austin Colab (Porto, 2018). In his work he explores visuals and interactive devices for the creation of audiovisual performances, installations and immersive spaces. He is also the visual side of the BorisChimp504 project and co-founder of the creative studio Openfield.

Sara Orsi

Sara Orsi is a web designer/dev, creative coder and researcher whose practice has as principal motto the impact of digital media on the contemporary culture. She is co-founder of Arquivo 237 – a cultural and educational project in Lisbon, focused on Architecture, Design and Technology –, and lectures at ESAD.CR and ETIC. With a background in Architecture from University of Porto, Orsi holds a master in Communication Design and New Media from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, with the dissertation From the Archive to the New.

Summary

SUMMARY is an architecture studio founded in 2015 by Samuel Gonçalves, at UPTEC - Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto. Looking for a balance between pragmatism and experimentalism, this studio develops prefabricated solutions with the objective of responding to a determining challenge of contemporary architecture - accelerating and simplifying construction processes.

Among the various works that this team has been developing, the GOMOS modular system stands out, which has served as the basis for several projects of the atelier and which was part of the main exhibition of the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2016.

In 2017, SUMMARY receives the Red Dot Award in the habitat category, and is a finalist in the international YAP contest, promoted by the Italian contemporary art museum MAXXI in partnership with MoMA (Museum of Modern Art, USA). In 2018, SUMMARY joins the list of the 40 most promising emerging architecture and design studios in Europe, selected by The European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.

Recently, SUMMARY has been sharing its research in the scope of modular and prefabricated architecture through the development of exhibitions based on virtual reality, which have been exhibited in different institutions such as the Boston Society of Architects (USA), the Bauhaus Centenary (Germany) or the Contemporary Arts Festival Budapest (Hungary).
